Modern cities use straightened and concrete watercourses with simple greening for riparian zones, which has been criticised for insensitivity to natural system integrity and cultural identity. This increases the challenge to urban ecologists, landscape designers and managers to conceive innovative and effective design solutions that do not jeopardise hydraulic efficiency yet are culturally acceptable to local communities. This paper introduces the field of local ecological knowledge (LEK) as rich sources of inspiration and design solutions to meet this challenge. LEK refers to knowledge and practices of various local cultures about the relationship of living beings (including humans) with their environments. Wepropose a pragmatic framework that integrates LEK with modern landscape design. It includes steps: (1) investigate existing practices, skills andmeasures relating to LEK; (2) explore how and whereLEKcan inspire or integrate withdesign. Here we propose three aspects for integration in accordance with the nature of landscaping process: overall structure, component and maintenance.(3)evaluate and test the integration in terms of its acceptability by local communities. Taking the riparian revegetation project of Hanfeng Lake Urban Wetland Park (Chongqing Municipality) as an example, we illustrate the utility of this framework. 11 local common practices relating to LEK were identified. According to thethree aspects for integration, alternative design solutions were offered. The survey showed that LEK based designwas more highly valued than other conventional ways in terms of useracceptance. We conclude that LEK provides actionable ecologically sound and culturally desirablesolutions for urbanlandscape. We also recognise that LEK evolveswith changing environments and new harmonious and dynamic human-nature relationships arecontinually re-forming. The process of acquisition and application of LEK could encourage multidisciplinary and synthetic approaches to urban ecosystems. Such adaptability and interdisciplinary engagementare crucial totoday’schanging and complexurban environments.  相似文献

Cover crop use can help mitigate the deleterious effects of common cropping practices (e.g., tillage) and is, therefore, an important component of soil health maintenance. While known to be beneficial in the long-term, the short-term effects of cover crops, specifically mixed-species cover crops in organic systems are less clear. Cover crop effects on tomato productivity and disease severity were recorded over three field seasons (2010, 2011 and 2012) at sixteen field sites in three states, Maryland, New York and Ohio (MD, NY and OH), each with distinct soilborne disease pressure. Plots of five state-specific cover crop treatments were established the season prior to tomato production; the resulting plant residue was incorporated the following spring approximately four weeks before tomato planting. Total fruit yields along with early-season shoot height and fresh weight were used to compare treatment effects on productivity. Treatment disease severity ratings relied on natural inoculum. Interestingly, the effect of a single season of cover cropping on total yield was significant in no more than 25% of all site years. Similarly, cover crop effects on tomato disease levels were significant in 0–44% of the sixteen field sites. However, significant field-specific patterns were observed in every state across multiple years for some treatments. For example, in New York in 2010, tomato yields following all mixed cover crops were greater than the single rye cover crop in one field, but this pattern was reversed in the adjacent field. Thus, no general recommendation of a specific cover crop mixture can be made for near-term enhancement of tomato productivity or for reduction of disease. Therefore, growers should focus on location and operation-specific variables when choosing cover crops.  相似文献

The response of the soil food web structure to soil quality changes during long-term anthropogenic disturbance due to farming practices has not been well studied. We evaluated the effects of three tillage systems: moldboard plow/rotary harrow (MP), rotary cultivator (RC), and no-tillage (NT), three winter cover-crop types (fallow, FL; rye, RY; and hairy vetch, HV), and two nitrogen fertilization rates (0 and 100 kg N ha−1 for upland rice, and 0 and 20 kg N ha−1 for soybean production) on changes in nematode community structure. Sixty-nine taxa were counted, total nematode abundance (ALL), bacterial feeders (BAC), predators (PRD), omnivores (OMN), and obligatory root feeders (ORF) were more abundant in NT than in MP and RC, but fungal feeders and facultative root feeders (FFR) were more abundant in RC than in NT and MP. Cover crop also influenced nematode community structure; rye and hairy vetch were always higher in ALL, BAC, FFR, ORF, and OMN than fallow. Seasonal changes in nematode community structure were also significant; in particular, as soil carbon increased, nematode abundance also increased. The relationship between nematode indices and soil carbon was significant only in NT, but not in MP and RC. In NT, with increasing soil carbon, enrichment index and structure index (SI) were positive and significant and channel index was negative. Bulk density was significantly negatively correlated with FFR and ORF. Seasonal difference in nematode community between summer and autumn was larger in an upland rice rotation than in a soybean rotation. Over the nine-year experiment, SI increased not only in NT but also in MP and RC, suggesting that repeated similar tillage inversions in agroecosystems may develop nematode community structures adapted to specific soil environmental conditions. Because NT showed the highest values of both SI and soil carbon, the increase of soil carbon in NT is expected to have a great impact on developing a more diverse nematode community structure.  相似文献

为更好地在渭北生态区进行苹果绵蚜防控工作,于2009年秋至2010年春开展其越冬状况调查。在试验园内选取苹果绵蚜发生较重的果树,定株调查,10d调查1次,分别观察记录取样部位、各虫龄虫量、被寄生数量。结果表明,苹果绵蚜在渭北地区11月中旬进入越冬,次年3月中旬开始迁移活动,主要集中在根部越冬,树干略次之,枝条处最少。苹果绵蚜以2龄若虫越冬为主,平均比例达65%左右;1龄和3龄若虫所占比例较少,各约占13%和17%;4龄若虫极少,只占4%左右;成虫不能越冬。对管理状况不同果园,越冬虫口基数没有明显差异,树干处越冬虫较易被寄生蜂寄生,枝条次之,根部最低。标准化管理果园苹果绵蚜被日光蜂寄生的寄生率高于普通管理果园30%左右,被寄生率达75%以上。可见,加强果园标准化管理有利于利用天敌防控苹果绵蚜。  相似文献

Genetically engineered corn expressing crystalline proteins for insect control and encoded by genes derived from soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are widely adopted in the United States. Among the seven different events of Bt corn available commercially, YieldGard® Rootworm (MON863) expresses a variant of the cry3Bb1 protein in the root tissue to control corn rootworm larvae. Although numerous laboratory and field studies show no unexpected ecological risks at the insect community-level above-ground, few studies have addressed the possible impact of cry proteins released from living or decaying roots of Bt corn on soil microbial communities. Here, we test the hypothesis that coleopteran-active Bt corn does not affect nontarget ecological processes, such as decomposition or the function of the associated saprophytic microbial community. Experimental treatments were: (1) a Bt hybrid; (2) a non-Bt, isogenic hybrid treated with a conventional soil insecticide; and (3) a non-Bt, isogenic hybrid without insecticide. Soil and root samples were collected at various times throughout 2 years from experimental plots to estimate microbial community function by quantifying activity of extracellular enzymes on 10 substrates. Decomposition was measured as mass loss by root decay in litter bags. Bt corn (MON863) exuding the cry3Bb1 toxin does not appear to have adverse effects on saprophytic microbial communities of soil and decaying roots or on decomposition. The addition of the soil insecticide had greater effects on microbial function in soil and decaying roots than Bt corn. Our results are similar to those found previously for the cry3Bb1 protein that showed no adverse effects on microbial community composition in controlled and natural environments. This field study is one of the first to report the use of extracellular enzyme assays to examine the effect of transgenic crops on the functional activity of microbes in soil and decaying roots.  相似文献

The present study investigated resistance against Botrytis cinerea after heat shock treatment in melon plants. Heat shock at 50 °C for 20 s 0–24 h before inoculation resulted in maximal B. cinerea symptom reduction and peroxidase gene expression, which peaked 12 and 72 h post-treatment and decreased 24–48 h post-treatment, suggesting pathogenesis-related protein expression priming. Hot water dipping did not directly inhibit mycelia growth. Plants treated with 2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one 1,1-dioxide, which induces systemic acquired resistance, demonstrated higher peroxidase gene expression but no B. cinerea resistance, indicating possible involvement of additional novel mechanisms in heat shock-activated resistance of melon against B. cinerea.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The potato psyllid, Bactericera cockerelli, is a vector of Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum, causing several diseases in solanaceous crops. Laboratory and field no‐choice and choice experiments were conducted to evaluate the repellency of kaolin particle film on adults of B. cockerelli on tomato plants that had been sprayed with kaolin particle film on the upper surface only, on the lower surface only and on both leaf surfaces. RESULTS: In no‐choice tests in the laboratory, the numbers of adults on leaves were not different between the kaolin particle film and the water control, regardless of which leaf surface(s) were treated, but numbers of eggs were lower on the leaves treated with kaolin particle film than on those treated with water. In choice tests on plants treated with water/plants treated with kaolin particle film at ratios of 1:1, 6:3 or 8:1, fewer adults and eggs were found on the leaves treated with kaolin particle film than on leaves treated with water. Under field conditions, in caged no‐choice or choice tests, fewer adults, eggs and nymphs were found on plants treated with kaolin particle film than on plants treated with water. In an uncaged test under field conditions, plants sprayed with kaolin particle film had fewer psyllids than those sprayed with water. CONCLUSION: Even though potato psyllid adults could land on plants treated with kaolin particle film when no choice was given, fewer eggs were laid. When given a choice, the psyllids avoided plants treated with kaolin particle film under laboratory and field conditions. Plutella xylostella (L.) (Plutellidae) is an important agricultural pest throughout the world. In this study, the morphology of antennal and mouthpart sensilla in the larvae and adults of P. xylostella (L.) was observed by using a scanning electron microscope. The larval antennae possess six sensilla basiconica, two sensilla chaetica and one sensillum styloconicum. Larval mouthparts possess six types of sensilla: sensilla chaetica, sensilla digitiformia, sensilla epipharyngeal, sensilla basiconica, sensilla styloconica and sensilla placodea. In the adult, seven types of sensilla are found on the antennae in males and six types of sensilla (sensilla basiconica absent) occur in females. Sexual dimorphism is also found in the number and size of these sensilla on the antennae of adults. We describe for the first time the five types of sensilla on the mouthparts of the adult of P. xylostella. This study provides useful information for further research into the function of these sensilla, and better understanding the behavioral mechanisms involved in pest control.  相似文献

为筛选高效低毒低残留的杀虫剂,有效控制铜绿丽金龟的猖獗危害。用浸渍法室内测定20g/L阿维菌素乳油、400g/L毒死蜱乳油、100g/L灭多威可湿性粉剂、25g/L联苯菊酯乳油、50g/L高效氯氟氰菊酯水乳剂等5种杀虫剂25个不同稀释倍数处理对铜绿丽金龟成虫的触杀效果。结果表明,400g/L毒死蜱乳油1 000倍处理对铜绿丽金龟成虫的触杀效果最好,药后24h防效达95.46%;其次为400g/L毒死蜱乳油1 500倍和100g/L灭多威可湿性粉剂1 500倍处理,药后48h防效分别达96.67%和94.74%;这3个处理对铜绿丽金龟成虫不仅触杀作用强,而且速效性好。其余22个药剂处理对铜绿丽金龟成虫的防效明显较差,药后48h防效几乎均在50%以下。据此建议,在铜绿丽金龟发生严重的地方,宜采用400g/L毒死蜱乳油1 000倍液、1 500倍液和100g/L灭多威可湿性粉剂1 500倍液进行防治,其余22个药剂处理不宜推广使用。  相似文献
